    a) folks, its mjr. i thikn he *knows* about inodes and filenames and just
    FORGOT about kill -HUP.
    
    b) this isn't for syslog only, but any app that logs. while i hven't yet
    found one that will not reinitiate logging on SIGHUP (or similar signal,
    ie SIGUSR1 on xinetd), it's entirely possible someone may. remember that.
    keeping the same inode may be required in some cases, or its a restart
    (stop/start) of the logging application.

    i still vote for logrotate. its just soooo configurable, in all the right
    areasl. and it keeps a backlog and shuffles them down for you. in the time
    it would take to build a homebrew on that did that you would find that you
    could have googled for logrotate and built it.
    
    FWIW OpenBSD uses logrotate.
