a) folks, its mjr. i thikn he *knows* about inodes and filenames and just FORGOT about kill -HUP. b) this isn't for syslog only, but any app that logs. while i hven't yet found one that will not reinitiate logging on SIGHUP (or similar signal, ie SIGUSR1 on xinetd), it's entirely possible someone may. remember that. keeping the same inode may be required in some cases, or its a restart (stop/start) of the logging application. thanks. i still vote for logrotate. its just soooo configurable, in all the right areasl. and it keeps a backlog and shuffles them down for you. in the time it would take to build a homebrew on that did that you would find that you could have googled for logrotate and built it. FWIW OpenBSD uses logrotate. ____________________________ jose nazario joseat_private PGP: 89 B0 81 DA 5B FD 7E 00 99 C3 B2 CD 48 A0 07 80 PGP key ID 0xFD37F4E5 (pgp.mit.edu) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: loganalysis-unsubscribeat_private For additional commands, e-mail: loganalysis-helpat_private
