From the non-open-source community (I know it's not that s*exy these days;)) : we would definitely support such a movement if there will be at least a minimal consensus... Maybe it even fits into the IETF syslog WG - as part of the message content not yet (really) defined... I know there are some obections about XML (I myself have some), but I think a very simple XML format would solve some of the issues and also provide extensibility....
