    I'm just now learning the joys of netcat and supposedly it can do 
    this.  From the hobbit.txt file contained in the zip file:
    
    nc -v -w 2 -z target 20-30
    
    This will scan ports 20 to 30 on 'target'.  There's also a UDP option,
    -u.
