Seeing how after my post hit the mailing list I got flooded with emails of people asking what I did to find a new job etc etc. I thought I would post my opinions (AND MY OPINIONS ONLY)and recommendations here. I first contacted everyone and anyone in the InfoSec community that I have good relationships with and told them that I was looking for work. I have a lot of personal thank you letters and bottles of wine to send out as a result but it is worth it. I then hit the usual spots. Monster.com Monster.ca Workopolis.com Dice.com, and GeekFinder.com I also posted my resume on my personal web site. I then posted my resume to this mailing list securityjobsat_private Then, I sent emails to LJ Kushner & Assoc. and Alta Assoc. I was very impressed with LJ Kushner (www.ljkushner.com) as I received a call back a day after sending in my resume. Unfortunately, I did not hear from Alta after sending them an email. Not wanting to wait for the phone to ring (I am kind of impatient when my paycheck is involved) I then started surfing security companies web sites that I thought I might want to work for and submitted my resume. Only after doing this did I sit back and let the phone ring. :-) To be perfectly honest, the position I ended up with came from one of my own contacts that I contacted the day I was let go. But, I do have to say that I was very impressed with the mileage I got out of LJ Kushner and another company who is in Vancouver, Tek Systems. Tek Systems had found my resume on Monster.Ca and had me set up with a few interviews and even up to today I still get phone calls from LJ Kushner which I definitely appreciate. They certainly seem to know the security market and had some good advice to offer me. I did however, get a lot of really dumb headhunters calling me based on posts to the job boards but that is to be expected and must be sifted through in order to find a good position. If I had to offer advice to recruiters/companies hiring -- if the person you are talking to has been let go from a failing company efficiency is the key. I am assuming that most people are like me and don't exactly anticipate losing their jobs and therefore want/need to find new employment as quickly as possible. Understandably proper background and reference checks need to be done but taking too long will result in a good candidate going elsewhere. Just my $.02 (Canadian) and I hope someone on this list finds it useful. Regards; Steve Manzuik
