    France Telecom R&D in South San Francisco is seeking a Network Engineer with strong knowledge of security mechanisms and firewalls. We are looking for an individuals with knowlege of international standardization organisms.

    NGN Network Engineer 
    The network functional architecture is based on media gateways, call control, signaling gateways, application servers, media servers and terminal functions. The NGN Network Engineer is responsible for, or contributes to the following activities:: 
    - Analysis of the north America market in terms of NGN platforms or network solutions for a global telecom operator 
    - Selection of solutions that could be evaluated 
    - Maintenance of the selection criteria grid for network solutions and manufacturers 
    - Evaluation of the NGN platforms 
    - Development of testing tools - Leader of the local network integration competency group Minimum requirements 
    - Familiarity with NGN solutions and hands-on knowledge of IP equipments in NGN architecture 
    - Knowledge of the philosophy of equipment tests (stand alone tests, end-to-end integration tests) 
    - Knowledge of CPE such as IAD, modems-routers, set top boxes… 
    - Knowledge of functional tests development for NGN products and related testing tools 
    - Good communication and teamwork skills within a dynamic environment 
    
    Knowledge of the telecommunications sector is essential, as the integration of innovative technologies and the marketing can rapidly change in emerging telecommunications solutions. This position requires strong win-win relationships with technical experts in France and development engineers from the North America manufacturers.     Responsibilities Networks solutions evaluation (40%) 
    - Compares different solutions to determine technical pros and cons. 
    - Evaluates and/or integrates products based on goals of the project in leveraging FTR&D France expertise 
    - Designs, develops and realizes test infrastructure 
    - Participates in specification and realization of tests 
    - Participates in the development of testing tools scripts 
    - Participates in demonstrations of innovative solutions to promote them to business units - Participates to audit prior to the delivery of new network product to business units Technology Research (30%) 
    - Detects new technology trends and innovative applications 
    - Participates in the survey of manufacturer solutions in order to evaluate new product functionalities 
    - Understands emerging technologies and how they can inter work with current technologies 
    - Contributes to project proposals 
    - Keeps track of telecommunications manufacturers technical roadmaps in regards to innovative functionalities or equipments 
    - Quickly acquires state of the art understanding of relevant topics, apprehend research approaches of the various players 
    - Leverages the expertise developed in FTR&D France in order to identify complementary technologies and sweet spots. 
    - Meets vendors and research players for FTR&D requirements and interests 
    - Keeps the knowledge of the team on the cutting-edge. Communication (20%) 
    - Requirement analysis to ensure development of customer needs. 
    - Participates in conferences and seminars 
    - Writes reports or documentation as necessary. 
    - Present work and demos. 
    - Effective communication with other team members Leadership (10%) 
    - Provide technical leadership for our local network integration competency group - Responsible for competency group technical roadmap - Work with competency group “mentor” to define the portfolio of work for the group Qualifications 
    - MS preferred, but BS required in EE or CS 
    - Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in telecommunications sector (R&D, consulting, design, support…) 
    - Strong desire to understand the theoretical models underlying the topic studied, and share this understanding 
    - Ability to communicate R&D results to clients, partners and colleagues is critical 
    - Self-starter who is highly organized, learns quickly, and is a team player. 
    - Technical skills for IP backbones: 
    - Some general knowledge of international standardization organisms (IETF, ISC, ITU, ATM forum…) 
    - Concept and functional architecture of NGN - Hands-on experience on network equipment setup and test 
    - Due to the R&D context, experience in writing technical reports and analysis - Knowledge of some of the following protocols and/or architectures: IP, RIP, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, QoS, VPN/MPLS, GigaEthernet, traffic engineering - Knowledge of at least 1 network management protocol (SNMP, CMIP, TL1…) 
    - Experience with router security mechanisms, and firewalls Additional requirements 
    
    This position requires collaboration with teams in France, which implies trips to France for short periods of time 
    Accurate, thorough, reliable, autonomous with a global vision of the telecommunication 
    Fluent in French is a significant plus 
    Skilled at writing technical reports for an international reader (decision makers, managers, technical experts…)
