Well, I worked in the computer services department of the University where
I went to school. I participated in the computer club, volunteered for
efforts like networking the dorms, and had computer/networking summer jobs
at local firms. By the time I graduated I had a lot of people willing to
bear character witness, and I had a good beginning resume.

One thing I wish I had done was spend the time and effort to get a
beginning certification like Cisco's CCNA or Nortel's Routing Specialist.
