(A reference to some good australian IT recruiter sites at bottom of email) A friend of mine is looking at a Network Specialist position here in Melbourne, the job description was in a nutshell: - conduct internal security audit - conduct internal policy creation - after internal project(s), work on consultative basis - be highly motivated, communicate well - Know UNIX, TCP/IP, Checkpoint & PIX, firewall config, encryption - Know Cisco WAN technology, NAT and RADIUS. (Oh, and knowledge of scripting languages a *bonus*) The salary? Around an 80k package. Which when you convert into US doesn't seem like a hell of a lot. But then our standard of living is cheaper. So it works out pretty nicely. I've seen a variety of people get sponsored by companies in Australia, so it is possible although I wouldn't have the foggiest clue about how frequent it is. I would take a punt that not many small - medium companies do it? Another friend is trying to enter IT, has the knowledge but no experience - getting a network support/admin job currently is proving a little tough. There seems to be a drop in entry/junior to basic experience level jobs. But if you're specialized or have management experience there's definitely options there. With that said though, we just had another bullshit law being pushed by the gov in August, if it goes through it's going to make access of network scanners and security tools very difficult to use in Australia, If it goes through, it's just demented.
