Sadly, that does seem to be the way of the world; most companies discount academic and Free software development (their loss, as far as I'm concerned). Age is also a factor. Getting taken seriously whilst you're under 24 can be tricky. Having said all that, even US$10 seems on the low side. Shop around - I reckon US$20-30 p.h. should be achievable, even without commercial experience.
