What is irritating is when you get the call from HR, and the HR rep
considers him/herself to be an expert negotiator, and refuses to give you
any indication of salary range at all, but instead demands your salary
history. Having worked as a consultant for several years, I've made
anywhere from 48K to 110K per year, depending on client and project. If you
tell the HR rep 48K (extreme low end, taken when times were tight), they
presume you will accept 46K for the incredible opportunity of working for
their magnificient company. If you tell them 100K, they say "Thank you" and
you fall into the Black Hole.

I recently had an HR rep tell me, off off off off off off OFF the record,
that I lost a position due to my age, which is 45. Companies, she
explained, no longer seem to want long term employees who want a stable
environment they can retire from. Companies want young, super-charged,
degreed certified test-passers who are also self-styled genuises that come
in, put in 3-5 years, and move on so the parent company does not have to pay
    retirement benefits.

Face it guys....it's an EmployERS market right now, and they damn sure know
    it.
